Sweet Elle turns 13 today! She's my out of the box child. She likes to fit in just enough to not stand out, but not enough to give up her own opinions. This is probably one of the only few character traits she and I share. It didn't surprise me in the least when she requested apple pie for her birthday!
Here is how our conversation went.
Me: "Elle, what kind of cake do you want for your birthday?"
Elle: "I mean, you can get one but I won't eat it."
Me: "Well what will you eat?"
Elle: "Can we do apple pie?"
So naturally if I was gonna be making it I knew it would have to have sweetened condensed milk in it!! In my opinion, if you are making any sort of dessert it should contain the most delicious ingredient known to man!
This apple pie didn't disappoint! It was full of apple flavor and the sweetened condensed milk caramelizes just enough to where it isn't sticky, gooey, but thick and creamy. It's so lovely and perfect for the holiday season!
INGREDIENTS
5 large apples, thinly sliced (you pick your favorite)
1/4 cup and 1/3 cup of packed brown sugar, divided
2 tsp ground cinnamon (Elle doubled this because she loves cinnamon and it was delicious)
1 14oz can sweetened condensed milk
1/4 cup butter, melted
1/3 cup AP flour
2 tbsp cold butter
pie crust (I purchased a pre-made crust from the store, located in the freezer section)
2 tsp of powdered sugar (sifted on top of pie)

Step 1.
Peel and slice appease very thin.

Step 2.
Mix together 1/4 cup of brown sugar and cinnamon and toss over the sliced apples until they are fully covered.

Step 3.
Pierce pie crust and blind bake for 7-10 minutes at 350 degrees. We do this to bake the crust just a bit before we put in the wet ingredients. After you remove the crust from the oven evenly disperse the apples in the pie crust. You may some juice in the bottom of the bowl. Don't add this in. You don't want the crust to become soggy.

Step 4.
Combine melted butter and sweetened condensed milk. Stir until combined and pour over the apples in the pie crust. NOTE: We weren't able to add the entire mixture. In fact, what you see photographed is actually overfilled because when we started baking it, it started to pour out of the sides and I had to remove some of it after the fact. I would suggest adding the sweetened condensed milk under the edge of the crust.

Step 5.
Bake pie at 350 degrees on a tin foil lined sheet pan for 35 minutes.
As the pie is baking, combine 1/3 cup of brown sugar and flour together and cut in cold butter. It should resemble a crumble. If you need to add a little more butter you can. Set aside.
Step 6.
After the 35 minutes, remove the pie from the oven and cover with the crumble mixture. Continue baking another 35 minutes.
Step 7.
Remove from oven and sift powdered sugar on top.
